Pool fences

A pool fence is a safety barrier first and a fence second

North Carolina's building code requires a barrier at least four feet tall around a swimming pool. The height is the easy part; the gate and the gaps are where barriers fail.

A fence around a pool exists to keep a small child out when nobody is watching. The North Carolina Building Code sets a minimum barrier height of four feet, and inspectors and HOAs in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties look for it when a pool goes in. A good pool fence goes further than the minimum: it has no footholds a child can use to climb, gaps narrow enough that a child cannot squeeze through, and gates that close and latch on their own every single time.

We build pool barriers in three materials. Aluminum is the most common: pool-rated panels have close picket spacing and no horizontal rails on the outside face to climb, and the open design keeps the pool visible from the house. Vinyl pool fence gives more privacy and matches a vinyl fence elsewhere on the property. Wood can work when it is built with the climbable side facing the pool. Every pool gate we hang gets self-closing hinges and a self-latching latch mounted high, and opens away from the pool.

Because the exact rules for latch heights, gaps and openings depend on the code edition and the local inspector, we confirm the details for your pool before ordering. If your yard fence doubles as the pool barrier, the whole perimeter, including any house doors that open onto the pool area, becomes part of the barrier, and we will talk through what that means. The pool fence rules guide covers this in more depth.

How we build a pool barrier

  1. Confirm the rules. Height, gaps and gate hardware confirmed for your pool and jurisdiction before ordering
  2. Plan the perimeter. Decide whether the barrier wraps the pool deck only or the whole yard, and account for house doors
  3. Set posts. Posts set in concrete so panels sit at a consistent height above grade
  4. Install panels. Pool-rated panels with the climbable side facing in and the bottom gap kept tight
  5. Gates. Self-closing hinges adjusted and the latch tested from every position the gate can be left in

Questions about pool fences

How tall does a pool fence have to be in North Carolina?

At least four feet under the state building code. Many owners go to five for extra margin.

Can my existing yard fence count as the pool barrier?

Sometimes, if it meets the height, gap and gate requirements all the way around. Any gate in it then needs to be self-closing and self-latching.

Does the gate have to open a certain way?

Pool gates should open away from the pool, so a child pushing on it does not open it. We hang them that way.

Do I need a permit?

A new pool needs one, and the barrier is usually inspected with it. We coordinate with your pool builder if the pool is new.

What about a beach-house pool that is rented out?

The same barrier rules apply, and good self-closing hardware matters even more with guests coming and going.
