Chain link fence cost: the lowest price per foot in the yard
If the job is to keep a dog in or mark a line without spending much, chain link wins on price, and black-coated mesh looks better than most people expect.
Chain link cost is driven by height, finish and the number of terminal posts. Galvanized is the least expensive. Black vinyl-coated mesh with black posts and rails costs roughly a third more and is accepted by many HOAs that reject silver. Taller fences use more mesh and longer posts, and every end, corner and gate post adds bracing hardware.
Chain link ranges
| Option | Installed, 2026 | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Galvanized, 4 ft | $16 – $28 / ft | Standard residential |
| Black coated, 4 ft | $22 – $36 / ft | Blends into landscaping |
| Galvanized, 5 ft | $19 – $32 / ft | Medium and large dogs |
| Galvanized, 6 ft | $22 – $38 / ft | Jumpers and larger lots |
| Privacy slats | $5 – $10 / ft | Added to the mesh |
| Walk gate | $250 – $550 | Matching finish |
| Double drive gate | $650 – $1,400 | 10 to 12 ft |
A worked example: a 120-foot dog run
A 120-foot enclosure at five feet tall in galvanized, with one walk gate:
- Mesh, posts and rail: 120 ft at $19 to $32: $2,280 to $3,840
- One walk gate: $250 to $550
Total about $2,530 to $4,390. In black-coated mesh, expect roughly $3,300 to $5,600.
Price questions
Is chain link the cheapest fence?
Per foot, usually yes, especially on long straight runs.
How long does chain link last?
Decades, if the posts are set well. Salt air shortens the life of galvanized steel near the water; coated mesh holds up longer.
Can I add slats later?
Yes. They add wind load, so on exposed lots we may suggest more posts.
Will an HOA allow chain link?
Many allow black-coated but not galvanized. Check your design standards.
Is it good for a pool?
It can be built to meet barrier rules, but other materials are often easier. See pool fences.
